A continuous duty compressor is rated to run continuously, or 100% of the time at a specified ambient temperature. A compressor with a duty cycle of 50% on the other hand, will need to stop and rest for the same amount of time it is expected to run. For example, if it runs for 5 minutes, it then needs to rest and cool for another 5 minutes before running again.
